This book was short and sweet. It's the story of Lainey, a young woman trying to find her footing, figuring out her place in the world.
Laney is quirky and with the help of her mom, she's quite knowledgeable about '80s pop culture. There are many references throughout the story, such as Breakfast Club and Duck Hunt. It sure kept things interesting, even if it made me feel old.
Brogan is a man who finds it hard to trust so he's set up rules that he and the people around him must abide by. Seriously. Dude has a rule book (manual), however meeting and falling in love with Laney helps him put things in perspective. She teaches him that life and love are worth taking a risk for.
If you're looking for a quick and light read, this book fits the bill.
Enjoy! xo

Right off the bat I have to say that the blurb for this book immediately caught my attention. I'm pretty sure it was the intriguing way things are put into a list, or "rules" as the case may be. Just enough to draw readers in.
I found it, honestly, delightful. I haven't read anything else by Jennifer Blackwood, but she'll be on my radar now. I loved the humor that was spattered throughout. Lainey's scatterbrained inner monologue was hilarious, especially when concerning her boss Brogan Starr whose 700+ list of rules for his company Starr Media is pretty crazy and difficult to live up to. The tension that builds as Lainey and Brogan at first dance around their growing attraction was great and kept me glued to the pages waiting for them to finally give in.
Jennifer Blackwood was great with the secondary characters as well. Especially Lainey's roommate Zoey. There's a lot going on with her in the background that we don't see play out in this book, so I'm hoping that means she'll get her own story next.
It's always the best feeling when an unknown-to-me author / book jumps up and surprises me. The Rule Book definitely did just that. This was a really good story of office romance.

Holy crappola! This book had me SUPER smitten!! I may have stayed up reading when I should've gone to bed because I had to work in the morning. I may have been thinking about this book ALL day at work until I had the chance to get back to reading it when I got on the bus...and I may have most definitely gotten completely wrapped up in this story!
The characters were AMAZING! I absolutely loved Lainey! She was so strong and stood up for herself, and I loved that she basically had no verbal filter, it was hilarious! I also really related to her. She's about the same age as me, and she's starting to pursue her career after getting her degree, so I clicked with her INSTANTLY! And Brogan...oh my goodness, Brrrroooooggggaaannnn....*dreamy sigh* I think I seriously fell in love with him. He was so freaking sexy, so nice...and totally emotionally unavailable, but still soooo hot, and tattoos, dimples, a dog...seriously, I'm in love. ;)
The setting of this book, and the whole boss/assistant thing had me thinking that THE RULE BOOK might be similar to BEAUTIFUL BASTARD by Christina Lauren. It definitely had those two aspects in common and the two leads also had AMAZING chemistry, but that was where the comparisons stopped. THE RULE BOOK was one-of-a-kind, and the characters were so fantastic....seriously, loved them to bits!! Their banter, the sexual tension, their dynamics, and just every single moment between them had me absolutely consumed! I laughed, I blushed, I cried, I grinned like a buffoon, and I may have even smirked a few times! This story just completely got to me, and I really loved it. It was the perfect contemporary romance for me...and the ending had me as happy as can be!
I'd recommend this one to fans of contemporary romance, especially if you like the whole boss/assistant/forbidden-romance type story and if you love dynamic characters with amazing chemistry! It's definitely a new contemporary romance favourite of mine!! :D

You’re telling me I paid actual money for this?
The ONLY reason I gave it two starts is because it kept me entertained. And not in a good way.

**You can see this full review and more at Book Briefs: https://bookbriefs.net**The Rule Book is the first book in the New Adult (Or maybe adult- I consider this one a cross over that would appeal to readers of both age groups) in the Rule Breakers series by Jennifer Blackwood. The Rule Breakers reminded me of The Devil Wears Prada with a male boss, and a whole lot more romance. I really enjoyed it! And I want more. Specifically, I want more from this couple pairing, so I am hoping the next book is about them too. (Side note: I don't think it will be, but I am keeping my fingers crossed anyway...)
Lainey and Brogan are the two main characters. Lainey is a recent grad student looking to move up in a PR/social media management firm. Brogan is the super young CEO of the company, and he has a rule for just about everything. Including no garlic in the office. Lainey seems to think all of the rules are crazy. I really liked the setup. It felt like Devil Wears Prada with all of the crazy specific things the boss wants done and the very high standards and rigidity he has while working, but it was also obviously very different because of the relationship between Lainey and Brogan.
I really enjoyed watching the two of them interact, I just really wanted to see more of Brogan. This book is told entirely from Lainey's point of view, and I would have preferred seeing it told in Dual narrative, but that is for entirely selfish reasons of me wanting more Brogan. (Though the author has said that if you send her an email linking to your review of The Rule Book to her, she will send you two scenes from Brogan's point of view. I will be doing that as soon as this post publishes!)
I loved The Rule Book. I think my favorite character was Brogan's dog with the farting problem, but Lainey and Brogan were a very close second. Watching him break all the rules was very rewarding. I do wish we got to see more form Brogan's point of view and I wish the second half of the book was longer, because I wasn't ready to say goodbye to Brogan and Lainey.
Bottom line: This is a great romance for fans of workplace relationships and of The Devil Wears Prada.

The beginning was so promising but then it just went downhill chapter after chapter! The couple was so annoying, alway sing breaking up for the dumbest thing and going back to each other after the dumbest make-up. It made so many references to Netflix like it was sponsored by them, and the excessive references weren't cute like on Gilmore girls, which was way over talked about. Like we get it you like Jess and rocky road ice cream. And the guys dad trying to blackmail her, the guys lost mom, the annoying dog were all so pointlessly added too. I really can't think of any redeeming qualities and I hate that so much. I really wish this book was as good as I was hoping it to be.
