Almost every page has an event that would be monumental for anyone else. For Billie Holiday it is just another page in a book showing what it means to have character. Even the most tragic events are told in such a straightforward way that broke my heart even more. I am so glad she overcame the many odds stacked against her to be able to share her voice. But that had a cost - she died hounded by police until her last minute and "poor as the day she was born".

Billie's narrative voice is clear and endearing and allows the reader to feel like they are really being spoken to by Lady Day. Furthermore, she sprinkles the largely harrowing story of her short life with lots of universal life lessons and political criticism, making her writing feel purposeful and relevant.

Such a fascinating account of Billie's life, which I knew absolutely nothing about.
Reading up on the book after finishing it, the book is mostly accurate which makes it even more astounding, given her childhood and the struggles she faced after becoming a successful singer.

This should be on anyone's list who wants to read more accounts of racism in this country.

Beautifully written, you really feel like you get to know her. It's very honest, witty and personal. Billie Holiday has an incredibly life story and no one could have told it better.
