I don't know what people are saying about this book, about its truth and the events that transpired but it is an absolutely important story and it outlines the racism, patriarchy, sexism and difficult times of the early 20th century.

Billie Holiday’s story is truly heartbreaking but it also shows how one woman can really do what she wants if she wants to and her perseverance or stubbornness as she called it, despite all of the adversities. She broke a lot of moulds and she adopted a lot of roles throughout her life and was proud of it.

I liked how the writing was out there, in your face and it felt like Holliday was just sitting next to me narrating her story. She didn’t downplay the injustices and the violence she endured but what I found disturbing was how well accepted the entire situation was by her. Then again, at the time all of the segreagation and violence against women, it was considered normal and people shouldn’t be questioning it.

If you like autobiographies and want to read about life in the USA during those times, then this is the book for you.
