very honest and authentic portrayal of growing up. its language hits the nail on the head, every bittersweet emotion is translated to the page with a uniquely truthful precision.
A rather wonderful, instantly recognisable account of the inevitable separation of adolescence. An account that it is clearly about someone quite different to me, a young woman in Antigua, meaning that it comments on the topics of womanhood and colonialism, but still produces a feeling of universalism that made it so easy to connect with.
beautiful ode to childhood! my only regret is listening to the audiobook instead of physically reading.

im looking forward for more kincaid’s works since this one hit close to home.
annie john is a poetic portrayal of adolescence and it’s necessary separation from childhood to adulthood. the novel brings light to the mother-daughter relationship that from the start was very nurturing and intimate but gets strained as Annie goes through adolescence.
my initial reaction was why was the Mother suddenly distant towards her, but as i tried to read and see through the mother’s point of view along with my experience, it wasn’t much of a surprise that maybe in my analysis that the story is in the narration of annie. we dont know much of what went on beforehand, and god only knows what a mother feels if their child is going through puberty.
as much as i liked this novel, i wish it explored more of their relationship since it was only shown from the start of the novel and at the end.
