For one thing Allie/Allison, the main character, doesn't totally act like a vampire. I mean yeah she drinks blood, can't be out in the day light...all the normal vampire things, but she still thinks like a human. She doesn't think of the humans as food, but as people. And she doesn't really want to hurt them. I say it's pretty simple: just drink blood from the bad guys, so long as it doesn't taste bad, and then hopefully you won't have to ever drink the blood of the your friends. Sadly it doesn't work that way :/
Second point, humans are still in the book A LOT and aren't there just for food either. There are some humans that are pretty important in the story. Zeke plays a main part and he's a really sweet guy :) But not totally sweet, still kick butt. He and Kannin and Allie were my favorites. And yeah 2 are vampires, but there are other human characters, I just didn't like them that much :/ (yeah I'm Team Vampire) Allie is a great main character and I cannot wait to find out what happens in the second book! I really liked the ending and how Allie is kinda finding a balance to being a vampire who still is friends with humans.
Overall, this is a really exciting book that I was surprised by (I really shouldn't have been, it's one of my favorite authors after all!) and really enjoyed. Content wise there is drinking of human blood and some violence + a good bit of language, but that didn't really bother me. I really liked this book and can't wait for the second!
Not too sure if I’m gonna continue the series or not but who knows. I’m curious to see what else this world might have to offer
When I read the synopsis for this book on my Kindle, I immediately bought it. It sounded really interesting, and I just had to read it right away. The synopsis did not disappoint, and I was immediately sucked into this frightening world.
Allie lives life as an Unregistered in the Fringe, the outer part of society. She is a scavenger, and she often has to steal things. She lives in an abandoned school with her "gang," which includes love interest Luke, thieving Rat, and cowardly Stick. They are running really low on food, so Allie decides to take a trip outside of the wall. I will admit, some of the parts in the book were downright creepy in the beginning, and I had to stop reading because I was downstairs and alone in the dark.
Spoiler
The rabids were the creepiest part of the book. They always seemed to pop up places, and whenever they did, my heart dropped. With the deer, and the part with all the random dead animals that gave the tell-tale signs of an attack. I usually don't get afraid when I read, but this time I did. One small problem I had with thisbook was Lucas's death. I know Allie the Fringer wasn't overly attached to people, but she had kissed him. I expected more then a, "Oh, look. He's dragged up the fence and was eaten by the rabids. I'm going to forget about him for the rest of the book now.The only problem I had with it was when Allison made the decicion to become a vampire. I don't understand how she could so quickly jump from hating the vamps to jumping at the chance to become one. I get that she was forced to make a quick decision and the suvivsl instinct kicked in, but I wish we could have seen more of a thought process there. I guess I really just don't understand it because I would have been more like Zeke in the sense that I would have rather died. Another little issue was that there wasn't much description. I knew more about what some of the random raiders looked like than what Caleb or Ruth looked like, which was I had no idea. I like imagining what they look like, but something basic like hair color or eye color would have been nice.
Allie's time with Kanin was interesting. Kanin had a very Dumbledore-y feel, with him being Allie's mentor. The first Hunt was really well-written, it made me actually hate the gang members. I also thought it was a nice touch with Allie picking a Katana for her weapon like the samurai, and she is Asian, yet she can't make the connection. Also, all the little things he said and the way he said them were so poetic and so true, especially when he said, "Some day you will kill someone. Whether unconsciously or consciously, you will kill someone..." Creepy.
Spoiler
The part when Allie found the little clan was very climactic. I guessed right away that Zeke would be the love interest, but I never guessed how much I would like him. The rest of the clan were sweet too, especially Caleb. But I really disliked Ruth with her desperate attempts to get Zeke to like her and Jeb with how he would push everything on Zeke, but you can't love every character. I also loved when Darren was like, "Damn girl," after seeing Allie behead the boar. I'm really sad that Darren had to die, I would have preferred it been Jake or someone else, but I guess everything happens for a reason. The book was split into sections really well. I almost felt like I was reading four very short books in one, because every time the section changed the whole setting and "villain" changed.
Spoiler
I'm really interested to see how Jackal and Sarren will come together in future books. They are both evil, and I'm wondering if they will join sides and if Allie will ever find Kanin. The love with Zeke was really well-written. There were times when I just wished Allie was human or there was some way she could become human. I could literally feel her frustration as she battled between her Hunger and her wanting.
Spoiler
When Zeke found out she was a Vampire, my heart literally sunk. But it was fool to watch them both grow closer to each other again and watch both of their inner battles. Zeke fighting feelings for something he was told to hate, and Allie's obvious struggles. I hope they get reunited in the next book. The whole idea with the apocalypse and how the rabids came to be was pretty cool. It was actually explained instead of just thrown in the reader's face. I only wish more of the history of New Covington was explained, but there will be plenty of time for that in future books. I'm also wondering who Allie's father is, and what sort of twist it will add to the story, as he wasn't even really mentioned except to say that he was "out of the picture."
This is currently my favorite vampire book and I definitely recommend it. I'm not the best at writing reviews because my thoughts get jumbled and sometimes I go off on tangents and random subjects, but if you are on the fence you should definitely give it a chance.
Allison Sekemoto is unregistered which means she is nearly invincible but it also means she lives a life of stealing, scavenging and hiding in the Fringe of the outskirts of a Vampire City. She and her crew struggle to survive in the day and at night they must hide if they are to stay alive. But one night, when she and her crew go at out night, she knows they’ve made a fatal mistake. When they are attacked by the Rabids, mindless creatures who wander outside the city walls, Allie is faced with a decision. Die or become one of the monsters she has hated all her life. A Vampire. Allie becomes the things she despises the most and is taught by her Sire how to fight and live as one. But when something happens she is forced to flee and joins a band of humans who are searching for a place that may cure the disease of rabidism. She must learn to hide what she really is and that’s hard to do around Zeke, who she is growing closer to. Will she be able to keep her Hunger contained or will she end up killing an innocent?
This book...I don’t know where to begin. Maybe I should start off with the character of Allision. I loved her. Simply because she was a bad ass girl with some crazy moves and ideas. I could relate to her because if I was given the choice to live or die I would choose to live, even if it meant becoming something I hated. She was strong, brave and determined to not let the monster inside her get the better of her. She doesn’t want to be a monster so she tries hard to contain it and cling to her humanity. I was rooting for her throughout the whole novel.
Zeke....I fell in love with him and his ways. His role in the group of humans was to protect them and he did a great job. He blamed himself for a lot of thing but Allie was there to help him. There were times when I just wanted to pull him out of the book and give him a great big hug because he was that amazing and heroic. In a way he was a lot like Allie. And their relationship wasn’t instant. It grew and as it did they did too.
Now onto Kanin, Allie’s Sire. He was one complicated character but I really liked him. I hope we get to see more of him in the next book. When we found out about his past I understood why he was the way he was. I want to know more and I think we’ll get it.
I loved Allie’s commitment to both Zeke and Kanin and that she wanted to help both at the same time but couldn’t. I just know that the next book will have so much more in store for her and Kanin and I hope Zeke appears as well.
Now onto the plot. There hasn’t been a good vampire novel in a while and this took us back to the original vampires. Monsters that needed blood to survive and wanted it and couldn’t stop once they got started. But not only do we have humans and vampires, we also have the Rabids that are more monstrous than the vampires. Vampires can stop themselves but Rabids can’t which makes them extra dangerous.
Everything about this book was thoroughly thought out and there were lots of twists and turns to keep me intrigued. I didn’t want to go to school or sleep because it was so fast paced that I didn’t want to stop and put it down. The descriptive scenes in this book were amazingly gruesome and seemed so real I was sure I’d have nightmares about Rabids coming after me. There were times when my stomach churned in anticipation and I was rooting for the group and Allison to get through this.
This book took a hold of me and wouldn’t let go. I won’t be forgetting this one for a while and I am super excited for the next one. This Vampire book was unique and totally original. I don’t think they’ll be another like it. Anyone who loves Vampire books or is a fan of Kagawa needs to get this and if my review hasn’t convinced you then I don’t know what will. But if you do take a chance with this book I can assure you that it will be everything you expect from Kagawa and more.
