Read for the Trans Rights Readathon, but this has been on my TBR for some time and wow it does not disappoint. I read a LOT of historical fiction, and this one is so special, so distinct from a lot of what's currently being published in the genre. There's this deeply emotional bond between Viola and Gracewood conveyed so well by Hall that it's hard not to get misty eyed yourself. Add to that the themes of  unapologetic and whole acceptance of self and truly quirky side characters, I am so so glad I was able to read this and that it exists. I did struggle somewhat with the pacing and dialogue, but the sheer joy of the epilogue made those small issues obsolete.

Loved the first 75%, the last quarter could’ve been completely cut out and I would’ve been totally fine :P but all in all very enjoyable!!

I've read most of Alexis Hall's books, and I do think this might be my favorite. From a cis-gendered perspective, I found that Hall took on the topic of being trans in this historical period and did it fairly well while making all of his characters accepting of Viola's identity because, at the end of the day, it's fiction and its romance, which needs a happy-ever-after. Hall did a good job of taking modern ideas, of transness, PTSD, bisexuality, etc, and fitting them into a historical context in a natural way that did not feel like prescribing modern terminology to the characters and the period. I enjoyed Justin and Viola's relationship greatly, and I liked that it had some aspect of adventure to it, and I look forward to reading the sequel, which I imagine will be about Mira.

The author gives further context and his own spoiler warnings within the book itself. Despite the fact the heroine is sometimes deadnamed, it is purely because people knew her before she transitioned (and they do not know that she has done so). It is never weaponised against her. The male love interest is disabled from the Napoleonic War and suffers with PTSD, using alcohol and laundenaum as coping mechanisms.
