I really respect what Erin Morgenstern has created - better than the Night Circus by far. But the issue with crafting trickle by trickle intrigue stories is; that there needs to be a valid reason for me to be interested in the beginning, you run the risk of reader fatigue by being constantly dramatic, and you need to deliver on the suspense (some of the metaphors weren't quite as well constructed as the needed to be and this story is like 100+ metaphors in trench coats).

Several times I had to force my way through reading this, comparatively less times did I find golden moments I really enjoyed.

If I could I'd give it 3.5 stars.

I spent the first half of this book fretting that I didn’t have headroom for it; holidays and commitments and all...but once I committed and pushed everything away, it was delicious and rich. I could visualize the sparkling scenes. Morgenstern has a gift for magic and whimsy.

What an absolutely intricate and gorgeous story! The prose was beautifully descriptive with a narrative that engaged me from start to finish. I found the book to be wonderfully heart-wrenching as it knew just which strings to pull. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in it, and I am definitely going to read The Starless Sea again in the future to catch more of the details hidden within.

Edit edit -
When words fail you just utilise someone else's, who is more qualified than you (a gorgeous piece of advice from an old teacher...that I'm sure he nabbed from someone else more qualified than him)

"The best moments in reading are when you come across something – a thought, a feeling, a way of looking at things – which you had thought special and particular to you. Now here it is, set down by someone else, a person you have never met, someone even who is long dead. And it is as if a hand has come out and taken yours." Alan Bennett - The History Boys (2004)

Original review-
This book did more for my relationship to reading than anything else has. Reading this felt the same way I felt when I was 13 and finally read one of the Harry potter's straight through without help (I love stories but reading has not always been my friend.)

Edit -
I keep trying to write a more expansive review than that top two sentences but I still can't - and I've read this book three times now.
