Really enjoyed this book. Gave me world building Harry Potter vibes where as a reader the universe is familiar enough yet very different. What drew me in the most was the Daemons. It’s hard not to think about what your individual Daemon would be. An owl? Lynx? I love Lyras character so much and felt very connected to her throughout the book and her relationships. I know this book was deemed the atheists response to books from CS Lewis and JRR Tolkien’s, who’s stories are connected to Christian and/or Christian themes. And the ending of this book made it clear.
The book isn’t perfect. Events happened quickly and weren’t drawn out, but at times it was hard for me to imagine with the swiftness of it all. But that really only happened twice. Also some dialogue seemed a bit unnatural or corny. And the ending (an event) seemed rushed and a bit awkward.
But I’m excited to read the next book and follow Lyra and Pans adventure.

It was alright. I heard tons of great things about this, but it just didn't work for me. I love the world building, I like the characters a fair amount. The plot just felt a bit flat, and I didn't really connect.

Phenomenal writing and excellent world building
I think Mrs Coulter was an amazingly written character with such psychological depth
And the way Pullman kept me guessing till the end from this development to another was really enjoyable

Hmm... (stoking my imagined beard) interesting.
This book is brutal, provocative and, yes, interesting. I was very surprised by it although I had high expectation. The most impressing thing about it were the characters. There is really no good or bad there (or all of them are bad, you decide). I mean the special ability of the protagonist is to tell the best lies.
I am excited about the next one!
