It’s really interesting to read this book after reading Paradise Lost- the ending is near identical, and it’s interesting how Pullman seems to be in direct conversation with Milton. I also appreciated the Homeric similes in the fight scene between the two bears- it was an interesting thing to include. I wonder if this book could be seen as an epic.

Lyra Belacqua, a wild, curious child growing up at Oxford’s Jordan College, stumbles into a conflict that spans worlds. Armored bears, witches, and her mysterious alethiometer will guide her adventures.
Pullman’s world-building is extraordinary: so familiar, yet filled with subtle differences that make you ache to explore further. The dæmons in particular embody something so human and yet otherworldly. They are a metaphor for whatever allows intimacy, selfhood, and experiences loss in our humanity.
What I loved most here is how Pullman turns complex emotions into words that feel simple and true, accessible without ever being diminished. This first book is a perfect opening for what is to come: it’s adventurous, full of wonder, and deeply moving.
