★x4 | (A-) 90% | AGES 12+ | This was very good! I really enjoyed this, especially the writing style and world building. The writing style has this traditional, almost classic feel to it that not many people write in anymore and it was pretty refreshing to see such an imaginary world come to life. In one sentence, from the position of a reader, I would describe this as: “A little girl in an imaginative world is thrown into conflict between world in which she is the only to save or destroy it.” By the way, these thoughts are my own, but you clicked this review and so you shall read it! ^^ Reading books is subjective. These were just some of my thoughts. Honest thoughts. The experience won’t be the same for everyone. The only reason why I’m making a “big deal” or writing a really long review about this is because in my household, this would be a controversial topic. Maybe it is for you too.
| Characters - ★x4 | Lyra, Lyra, Lyra. I don’t know if Lord Asriel or Mrs. Coulter is the bad guy, but you do hold your own. Like, you’re almost the bad guy yourself. But anyways. Lyra can be very clever sometimes when she isn’t being gullible and naive and telling every single stranger she meets what’s she’s doing, but then again, she’s only eleven. But still, I felt like a little girl all alone on this sort of quest if you will should have taken a lot more precautions. Still, she was an adorable character for the most part.
| Storyline - ★x4 | For the storyline, I feel like with the style it was written in, certain events wouldn’t work well if it was written in another way. Like this style, is the only style that can pull off certain moments that would have seemed dull in others. So this part of the review accounts for the Writing too. It is attention grabber from the very beginning. So yes. It was a pretty good storyline.
| Writing - ★x4 | Good. I like the style.
Should you read this? In this story, kids have daemons (I mean, don’t we all.), but they are seen as a good thing. This could be seen from a demonic point of view. Also there are excerpts from the Bible that i found weren’t entirely accurate, so as a parent, be sure to tell your kids that this is some sort of inverted retelling of Paradise Lost which was written in a dramatic and sort of heretical way. As a Christian with a firm foundation in my faith, I was able to read this and enjoy it. It was definitely interesting to see Pullman’s point of view no matter how much I disagree with him saying that C.S. Lewis was a terrible author. Hey, when you offend C.S. Lewis, you offend me, so what can I say? What do you want me to do? Lol
But just a warning. I would walk your Christian kid through this or wait till they’re older till you let them read this. Otherwise, this was a really interesting read and I would definitely recommend this as a “Read at least once in your life!” Kind of read.

I was afraid this book wouldn't stand against the test of time and me getting older. Fortunately I was wrong.

I loved this book as a kid and I love it now. I especially appreciate the strong themes and underlying political/religious themes as an adult
