I have been listening to the audio version from the library (which is actually a nicely done audio - multiple players, not quite a dramatization, but still nice) - and the story is not hooking me, I am somewhere in chapter 3, and I am giving up. Too many things I really WANT to read to force myself on something that is just eh.

The Golden Compass is about a young girl named Lyra that leaves her home of Jordan College when children, including her best friend Roger, start to go missing. Lyra has to go the North to discover where Roger and the other children went, and the mystery behind the substance Dust.
This book is a doozy. The fantasy elements of the narrative are absolutely fantastic. The daemons being the physical form of a person's soul is such an interesting concept. Every interaction between Lyra and Pan is amusing or heartfelt. Pan is definitely the best character. Lord Asriel and Mrs. Coulter are such complex characters that I couldn't help but be entranced whenever they make an appearance. Is this a strange book? Yes. An interesting book? Also yes.

I first started this book in 2002 whilst on holiday in Cyprus but I gave up on it because I found it very dull and couldn’t get into it.
However I enjoyed it second time around. I’m not 100% sure about the anti-religious message it seems to be portraying but if you ignore that I thought it was an enjoyable read.
As for the comparisons between it and Harry Potter - for me, the books are not alike at all - I much prefer the latter!

Sorry Golden Compass, I couldnt get past chapter 3...But then I decided to pick it up again. So after chapter three it gets a LOT better. I actually really enjoyed it too, esp the audiobook version, because they used a whole cast of voices. I would definitely rate this book a solid 4+ but because of such a rocky start and the fact that there is no actual ending to the book at all, keeps it a 3.
