That was a very fun read. A little slow in the middle but the world and the magic and the characters had me deeply engaged the whole time.

It took a little while to get into; the beginning felt very young-adult, and the gyptian chapters were dull as you get.

However, once we got to the north, I really enjoyed the read. The human/daemon relationship is fascinating to learn about and it's easy to feel horrified by the idea of the cutting, even as we don't really understand what it is. I loved Iorek Byrnison, of course (who wouldn't?), and Lyra.

Best moments: Bolvangar, the bear battle, and the final two chapters.

A children's book that I don't know if I would have liked nearly as much as a child.
I wasn't sucked in by every adventure and almost thought there were too many story arcs for one book but still thoroughly enjoyed this one.
The daemon-soul concept will never not be sick as hell.

I didn't expect to like this book, but I did actually enjoy it quite a bit. I haven't gotten to the other books in the trilogy, but maybe someday I will.
