This book released when I was 5 and I cannot believe I waited 25 years to read this book. I guess I vaguely remember it being banned from school libraries back when the bible belt PTAs were all in a tizzy about magic (and I suppose this book would be blasphemous as well) so I guess that answers that.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book and the various magic systems within. I didn't even mind the child characters which I usually despise. I'd highly recommend you to check this book out if you haven't read it by now as I had.

I really regret not reading this book when I was younger, I would have loved it so much. I expected this to be more of a children's tale but it had a surprising seriousness to it. It tackled a lot of big, heavy issues, like death, corruption, growing up, the Church, ethnic identities, class. Lyra was a fantastic main characters, bold and brave but not afraid to admit that she was afraid or unsure. I'm really eager to finish the rest of the series
A really incredible journey of a girl and her daemon. Mysteries are presented and answered in a good amount of time. Well written action scenes and you really care about the characters.
