I love that, in this story, no part of life is considered too hard for a child to consider or engage with, but WOW there is trauma that unfolds. I’m thankful for a clever, gritty girl being the center/heroine of an adventure story so far-reaching as this, but it added a layer of horror that the focus of this torture tale was children and their beloveds. Difficult to read, harder yet to put down.

Wow. This is the third time I've read this book, but the last time I reread I was 16. The first time I read these I was 12 and got gifted these for my birthday and became instantly obsessed with Lyra, Jordan College and the wild world in this book. As an adult, it felt like a warm mug of tea being back with my childhood hero... and then I realised how DARK this book is for a Middle Grade! I can't believe I didn't have nightmares as a child with the amount of death and destruction in this book.

Reading this as an adult was such an amazing experience. This novel stands the test of time both in the years since he was published and growing up since reading this initially. I still felt as deeply for Lyra, Roger and the gyptian gang as I did back then, forgot how much I loved Iorek the bear and how DESPERATELY I grew up wanting my own Pan. It SUCKS that deamons aren't real and I'll take that to the grave.

I'm rereading these now as I've not yet explored the Book of Dust series and I'm so nervous about how that series will unfold after His Dark Materials. There's a reason this series is my childhood favourite and I'm so pleased it's remained to be such an incredible, moving, adventurous story as an adult. Phillip Pullman's writing is sublime and having him narrate this audiobook made it SO special. You can tell he really lives for these books and these characters are real for him.

I can't wait to keep reading the rest of His Dark Materials and re-meet Will.
