Lyra is a girl, adventurous and stubborn, who is the crux of a theological reality-changing conflict. There are many colorful adventures, interesting people with their companion daemons, and some interesting sights. There is also a great load of predestination and foreshadowing and children at mortal risk and other unpleasantness. The world-building is worth exploring even if, as I'd judge, it doesn't seem robustly engineered.

Returning to Northern Lights (also known as The Golden Compass) after years is like stepping through a familiar doorway into a world that still shimmers with danger, wonder, and a fierce kind of magic.
The story follows Lyra Belacqua, a wild, headstrong girl raised among scholars at Jordan College in an alternate Oxford where science, theology, and magic entwine. When her friend Roger vanishes, Lyra sets out on a journey to the icy North—a place of armored bears, witch clans, and mysterious experiments with soul-like entities called dæmons.
Rereading the novel with adult eyes reveals the philosophical undercurrents Pullman weaves beneath the thrilling plot. The Magisterium’s grip on truth, the betrayal and bravery of adults, and the shifting moral landscapes all resonate more sharply. Yet Northern Lightsnever loses its elemental charm: the bond between humans and their dæmons, the crisp beauty of Pullman’s prose, and Lyra’s fierce, unyielding spirit.
More than just a fantasy, Northern Lights is a book that grows with you. It’s as much about seeking truth as it is about losing innocence. Whether read for the first time or the tenth, it leaves an imprint—like the pawprints of a snow-leopard dæmon, deep in the frost.

It was very interesting revisiting this book as an adult. Lyra is a great character and I find the world mesmerizing. Not all of the plot points held my attention equally, but the parts that are good are really good!

I love this series. I have read through all three books at least 10 times now. This series is children's literature, but it is very much for adults as well. Be aware that if you are sensitive to critique of religion, then this book is not for you you as it can be considered "commentary."
