Felt quite jaded recently with the genre, completely fed up with books written in the first person and halfway through they announce they're someone else and things are not what they first appeared to be. . Yawn yawn!
Then a new Rebus comes out. I've read them all, and am never disappointed. This one was no exception, Rebus at his least quarrelsome and most intuitive, and Big Ger, my second favourite Rankin character, reflective and vulnerable. I read the first page in Waterstones and couldn't wait to get started.
Ian Rankin writes intelligent, well plotted well researched books, his characters act exactly the way you expect them to, you know them well and love them all.
I doubt many of the current crop of authors will be celebrating 20 books featuring the same character, let alone 20 books.
Bravo yet again.

You can't go far wrong with a nice bit of Rebus.

These Rebus stories just keep getting better.

Really boggy middle. I put this down for months because It didn't feel like it was going anywhere.

I had the strange sensation of feeling I had read the Cafferty / Shooter with threatening notes side of the story before but not the Gang Takeover stuff with Christie and the Starks.

The book then looks to tie the two plot lines but that's a red herring. It's a clever concept, but makes a big chunk of the book feel like spinning in circles.

The Malcolm Fox stuff is weird here. He is mega sympathetic. Which coming from seeing how antagonistic he is with Rebus and Co in future books, doesn't make any sense. Is this experience and losing his Dad what push him into being a shit in the next few books?

Usually love Rankin and Rebus, didnt really like this.
