The Shadow of Kyoshi

Good Ending

The first Kyoshi book consumed me and I loved it. I loved all the characters and seeing Kyoshi struggle with right & wrong & everything. The Shadow of Kyoshi didn’t hit me the same way until the very end, but the ending felt perfect to me. Heartbreaking, but it came to an end in a way that felt tied to the beginning in a really beautiful way. I love Kyoshi & her companions so much.

For some reason the Kyoshi novels really surprise me with how they manage to get me to deeply care for the characters. I love Kyoshi and her gang almost as much as I love the OG Team Avatar.

I didn't realize this was intended as a duology when I read the first novel and now that I am finishing the second, the novel is better for it. Once the threads woven in from the very first novel start tying up it is so satisfying. The two novels chronicle Kyoshi becoming the avatar beautifully and, just like the first, it doesn't pull any punches, creating a much darker view of the Avatar world and it is so much better for it. Everything is grey and, even in success, there is failure. I love it and while this particular story is wrapped up so well I'm not sure I want another, I definitely want more of this older, darker storytelling. It's wonderful and, thankfully, the Avatar world is so deep and vast, there is plenty of material to explore even if the author doesn't want to continue Kyoshi's stories.

I love these novels, the author does such an amazing job, as did the writers writing and creating the legend of Korra, of creating a "new" avatar world but also tieing it in to both the past we may already know about and the future we may know is coming.

On top of that the villains, always feel so different yet real. Many big Hollywood villains nowadays just feel like empty punchbags there to make the good guys look good.

Very happy with both the first and second book and I didn't realise they could please me with this second one by going in a different direction than what I expected multiple times.

I enjoyed this book, I think that the action scenes were written well. I also thought that the storyline was really intriguing, enough for me to fly through the book in a couple of sittings. I loved getting to know more about the fire nation culture. The main villain was really unexpected for me, I did not think that things would happen the way that it did. It was a complete page turner.

However, I did not love the way the mc acted in this book. I thought she was annoying in some parts, which is sad because the reason why I gave the first book 5 stars is because of how much I loved her character. I also thought that the author could have explored more with the side characters from the first book, I found their cameo scene to be quite cliche. Overall, I thought this is a strong conclusion to a great duology.

Even though I loved the first book with my whole heart, I was STILL skeptical about reading this! What if it wasn't as good as the first one? Thankfully, it didn't take me as long to pick this one up! It's every bit as good as the first book, and I looked forward to reading it just as much. The characters, the relationships, the political drama (with the added heat of Fire Nation politics!) are all wonderful. The tone of this one is grittier, which I didn't think possible, but it fits so well with the story. I wish there were more in this series.

I really enjoyed this book. It was great to see Kyoshi before she became the tower of strength we've seen in other Avatar media. I love her relationship with Rangi too, it was so good to see.

So many things were happening that I felt like I was losing pages too fast and how on earth was this story going to conclude with only a few pages left! But it did. And it was sooooooo good.
