More or less exactly what it says on the cover; the book summarizes the evolution of science fiction starting with Poe, Wells, and Verne through to the state of the genre as of 2011 with lengthy debates on what was and was not considered science fiction in different periods, and how the genre was influenced by world events. Also does a good job of looking at science fiction from marginalized groups (women, people of colour, queer people), and I now have a list of books to read as long as my arm.
