Hands down, the best book I have ever read. I love Dostoyevsky, and his influence is obvious throughout, but Tartt brings a modern twist to him, with the most beautiful writing. There’s also drama and intrigue, far more of a thrilling plot than anything from Dostoyevsky.
Think Tolstoy and Dostoyevsky, combined together beautifully for the modern day and you are somewhere, somewhere close to imagining the beauty of this book.

Kolejna książka, która trafiła na moją listę 5 gwiazdek. Pomimo ciężkiej tematyki i wielu wątków, które w żadnym stopniu nie odnosiły się do mojego życia, byłam w stanie mocno wciągnąć się w myśli i rozterki głównego bohatera. Bardzo podobał mi się styl w jakim została ta książka napisana, a przemyślenia bohatera nadawały historii tego rodzaju głębi, który lubię najbardziej.
Poruszała ona wiele ważnych wątków, jak utrata bliskiej osoby, uzależnienie, traumy, stracone dzieciństwo. Główny bohater momentami irytował mnie swoim zachowaniem, będąc typem człowieka, który martwi się o najbardziej niestworzone rzeczy, ale i tak potrafiłam zrozumieć co po niektóre, a przynajmniej wyobrażałam sobie trudności z jakimi musiał się w swojej głowie zmagać.
Temat przewodni sztuki i obrazu Strzygła dodawał całej historii piękna i zachęcał do przemyśleń. Nie jestem osobą specjalnie pochłonięta sztuką i ogólnym artyzmem, ale nawet ja miałam momenty, gdzie dany przedmiot czy krajobraz zatrzymały mnie na moment, dając mi poczuć głębokie uczucie piękna, którego nie dało się ubrać w słowa.
Historia, pomimo ciężkich tematów potrafi też momentami być piękna i czysta w swoich przemyśleniach. Na pewno jest warta przeczytania.

Truly a piece of art in itself. So frustrating, yet so rewarding.
The characters (in particular Boris, Theo and Hobie) and story were compelling. I thought she was an excellent writer but as many mentioned she needed editing. I did feel that the last portion of the book was preachy....and a bit too much. This was the difference between 4 and 5 stars for me.

i think this book was just too long, i got 3/4 of the way through and story of stopped caring, which is a shame because the plot twist was really good i just thing the book meandered for too long

Yo amo la manera en la escribe Donna Tartt, tiene un talento increíble para llevarte a todas sus ambientaciones y te sientes parte del libro en todo momento. Aquí el ritmo me encantó, especialmente en toda la parte de Las Vegas, creo que es la base sólida para llevar la historia y a partir de ahí ya no puedes soltar el libro. He amado la construcción de cada momento de vida, no se siente brusco el cambio de edades y el argumento central nunca pierde fuerza, incluso con el paso del tiempo.
Por supuesto, he amado los personajes. Theo como narrador me parece perfecto, no queda más que creer en él y siento que me identifiqué mucho con todo lo que sentía de emociones fuertes y muchas veces distorsionadas. Boris es un graaan completento, soy fan de la manera en la que se trata, como gris. Creo que la relación entre ambos es clave para su evolución individual y la trama se enrolla en ellos.
Hay que tener en cuenta que son mil ciento y algo de páginas por lo que puede complicarse para algunos, pero es un libro que invita a la reflexión artística (me recordó mucho al prólogo de "El retrato de Dorian Gray" con la depresión y el arte por el arte). Se vuelve de mis favoritos y no me extraña.

This would have been five stars if the book had not been so long. It really could have done with an edit, particularly towards the end, but otherwise it was extraordinarily readable. I've seen it described as Dickensian and that really is the right word for it as we follow Theo and his struggles to cope with life after the death of his mother in a terrorist attack. The accidental theft of a painting and his burden of guilt lead him to make some very bad decisions, but despite his many flaws I never found him totally unsympathetic and was completely immersed in his story. Vivid and compelling, it reads at times like a thriller. An excellent read.
