This book changed the way I think about beauty, suffering, and the human experience. It is my most heavily annotated book, there were so many times where I just had to set it down and stare at a wall because I was so moved by the prose. It’s heavy, philosophical, brash, and not at all what I expected. This book made a deep impression on me. Donna Tartt will forever be one of my favorite authors, simply for the way she challenges everything I thought I knew about Death, Beauty, and even my own soul.
My favorite of the year. Maybe in my top ten of all time.
My feelings about this book are as convoluted as the book itself, but can perhaps best be summed up with this quote from the book, "Can't good come around sometimes through some strange back doors?"

Oh no, not the grief over a perfect mother adored by everybody and having no negative traits who died too soon. Not the pointless descriptions of who wore exactly what and when. Not the cliche of "she hated smoking cause her parents died of cancer".
