I am really sorry because I'm clearly going against the crowd here, but I found the book overly long when it really could have been concise. I found no sympathy or empathy for the main character in any way, shape, or form, and frankly, the last few pages of the book which go into a trippy philosophy of life and whatever else was just painful.

DID NOT FINISH

Too much detail for unnecessary things.

The majority of this book was incredible. I spent days not wanting to put it down. However, there were some parts where all I could think was, "get to the point". I guess with 771 pages that's bound to happen. Beautiful story nonetheless.

When I saw how many pages this book was, I got a little nervous. I haven’t read a book of this caliber in ages, but I found I could not put this book down. I understand some comments saying there was not enough going on, but I think that’s the point. Spanning over years there is a turbulence and the simplicity of some chapters made it so real. Theo’s perspective felt so real and although he made tons of wrong choices, everything leading up to it made sense for someone who has been through what he has and overall it just felt innately human. I totally agree with readers who find him unsympathetic and flawed, but somehow that didn’t bother me in this book as it has in others.

Also just having the book’s overall theme be The Goldfinch, this beautiful but simple painting of a bird just really hit me as different and just phenomenal for literary devices.

All in all, without getting into it I thoroughly enjoyed this book and after reading the last page said wow, so if you get a little turned off by the large page number I urge you to still give it a shot.
