From page to page and paragraph to paragraph, I loved and hated The Goldfinch.

I've never felt so conflicted about a novel--I didn't know if I wanted to abandon it or stay up all night to finish it. The beginning and ending were perfect--gorgeous writing and thinking. It's the meat of the story that riled me up, confused and sometimes left me cold.

This book was a challenge to get through, but a beautiful monster of a challenge.

Beautiful prose, loved how the author managed to really use expressions that conveyed the pessimistic view of life of Theodore. Loved the characters’ relationships, and how you related so much to Theo and the fact that for most of the book neither of you know what’s going on or why something is happening and feel the unfairness of it all. Very beautiful, lyrical at times in the accurate descriptions, but the ending I found way too philosophical and too much like the ending of an essay by a college student (sorry).
