absolutely incredible. surpasses the Secret History by miles.
every scene was a page-turner and I spent one very, very long day doing nothing but reading this book because I couldn't stand not to! takes you so far out of reality you forget you're not living in new york falling in love with beautiful redheads and russian-australian alcoholics. boris is hilarious and so ridiculously true-to-life I almost believed he was real. theo is a sad sad tormented boy. everything cleans up so neatly. i love this book.
maybe i'll think of some flaws later but right now... wow. no spoilers, but the ending is profound beyond description!!! Tartt put some of her soul in this novel.
i'm scared to watch the movie because (although it looks pretty and fairly accurate to my mental picture) what if it ruins everything beautiful?!?!

This book was an exhausting and trying read but worth it. I cared so much about Theo that all his misadventures and bad luck caused me so much stress! In the end, i think the book has a worthwhile message and the characters are so real and interesting. The writing is beautiful.
I at one point was disappointed with this book, where was it going. It is beautifully written and the characters are intriguing, yet I was missing the spark. And then it hit and it makes so much sense. Beauty alters the grain of reality.

Ugh, this book. This book. It took Tartt 10 years to write it. Maybe she should have taken 8 years off of that and cut out the extraneous stuff. So much detail about everything, and it just dragged on and on and on and on...you get the idea. So many things and ideas that are raised, only to be dropped for hundreds of pages, only to be brought back up for convenience sake. So much detail that is totally unnecessary. And I won't lie, but after the ridiculous story ending, I couldn't even read her wrap-up chapter. And that's what it was; a wrap up of all the crap she shoved into this book. I just don't think a good book needs a chapter for wrapping up the feelings of all of the stuff that was written in it. Wrap-ups are for essays and theses. Not for books.
