Sloths seem mighty popular these days, but that might be because of Kristin Bell. (I do admire Ms. Bell!) She adores sloths!
This story is about a girl who wants to have a pet, but her mother requires a pet with little to no maintenance. Her daughter orders a sloth. Underneath the story of having a sloth for a pet, the keeping of promises is shared as well. It might be hard, embarrassing, or strange, but a promise is a promise. It's a great lesson that is gently woven into the story. The younger students (4K-K) got antsy halfway through the book, but the older students (4th-5th) listened well the entire time. I think some of the concepts were easier to grasp for the older ones, than the younger listeners.

Our narrator of this adorable tale wants a pet more than anything in the world, and the only pet that meets her mother's qualifications is the sloth. After she has Sparky mailed to her, she just wants people to love him as much as she does. Thus she makes several failed attempts at teaching Sparky tricks where he makes the same face I always made in gym class:
Eventually our narrator realizes that it doesn't matter if people find Sparky impressive, because she loves him and that's all that matters.

This book is so cute! The drawings are gorgeous and the sloth is adorable. The story is a bit bittersweet but leaves you with a content smile on your face. I just wish the sloth would've looked a bit happier in some of the illustrations. Sad sloth makes me sad.

When a little girl finds a loophole to get her very first pet! This is an adorable story with nice illustration to boot!
