The Counselors

The beginning was strong and bonded me to Goldie and her best friends at camp. Once the mystery began the story stalled for a good portion which is when my interest began to wane. The aftermath of a character hitting a pedestrian while driving was inaccurately portrayed, especially since it was in the middle of the night during a snowstorm when the pedestrian was drunk. I was hit by a car on a sunny day and heard horror stories from my lawyer regarding other pedestrians being at fault and never the driver, so this also bumped down my interest.

I loved the bond between Goldie and her friends which I felt was the highlight. The mystery aspect was definitely lacking due to Goldie not really solving anything and only jumping to conclusions. I wish the story had focused more on the camp atmosphere as Goldie and her friends were counselors instead of only highlighting conversations between the girls in between activities and when they go into town to party. The mystery was also pushed back to focus on the drama between Goldie and her friends which was another thing I wish were different.

Thank you, Edelweiss for an ARC.

This was a pretty solid YA thriller. They were all a little dramatic and boy crazed, but they werrrrrre kids so I accept it. Lol.  Overall I really enjoyed it. I did guess the ending before it got there, but the author did have me worried it was someone else for a bit.

However, i was pretty annoyed over the way the guys treated her after the cover-up... they didn't HAVE to be douchebags, so i dont really understand why they were and made everything worse for her.

This made me so mad everyone failed Goldie, including herself. How could anyone be soo in love with a kid that truly screwed her over.

This YA murder mystery is set in Alpine Lake Camp with 3 friends all from different backgrounds-Imogene, Ava, and Goldie all grow up going to and then become counselors.

Ava is super rich but her dad is a scam artist who commits tax invasion. He also leaves Ava and her mom had an affair with another woman. They have twins and go to the camp.

Imogene is just the 3rd friend??? No major character development there

Goldie the main characters parents work at the camp and they are locals. Goldie gets to go to this rich camp bc of that. Goldie BF Heller gets drunk and almost kills a teammate. Goldie being sober takes the fall, signs an NDA gets community service and the whole town hates her. Stu and Mellie the camp owners take her in and protect her.

Heller ends up being killed. He found out about Ava’s dad committing tax invasion- they want to go think Ava killed him bc it was actually Stu and Mellie bc they were also apart of this tax invasion scheme. Stu and Mellie lock Goldie and Meg (another minor char. You think commited the murder but didn’t) in the dinning hall and set it on fire. Cut to Ava and Imogene saving them, Stu and Mellie confessing and the camp being close.

Cal another minor character who knew the truth about the accident agrees fo help Goldie tell her side of the story.

This was honestly a really great book from start to finish. The twist at the end could have been predictable for some but I was shocked for sure. Just when I thought I had things figured out, I really didn’t. Loved this, loved the ending and I truly enjoyed it.
