Gon and his new friends are still within their hunter trials, having completed one phase of several. In Phase Two, the applicants have to please a pair of Culinary Hunters who specialize in gathering ingredients from strange places and foraging for what they need to survive. The two judges have vastly different trials and pallets to please, and many of the applicants are weeded out in this phase. Afterwards, Gon and Killua are given a special chance to get their hunter’s license going up against the Chairman in an effort to take a ball away from him, but his speed and agility prove to be too much for the two of them. In Phase Three, the remaining applicants have to reach the bottom of a tower. The four acquaintances, plus Ton (the slimy guy who has been trying to mess people up all trial), all end up in the same challenge - Majority Rules - and they find out what Ton's motivation has been in trying to sabotage the trial.
This series kind of throws readers into this trial with minimal investment in Gon, but the trials definitely make him more endearing. He’s not as bright as some of the other competitors, like Killua, but he’s sweet and has a good heart. Killua is an intriguing character. We learn this volume that he comes from a family of assassins, but he ran away from the family business in order to become a hunter. He’s still ruthless and a bit cold, as killers tend to be, so him fitting in with this little group is interesting. I don't personally care for Ton at all, but I understand that there had to be someone to dislike in the absence of an actual antagonist.

Just the second volume in a series of 35 and ongoing, if I'm not mistaken, and the killing has already begun. In case you have mistaken this series for something appropriate for children.
My biggest complain would be two things so far:
First, Hisoka doesn't appear as threatening as he's supposed to be. He's just not as... intense as he should be. In fact, Killua looks more threatening than him.
Second, there are not enough girls. Yet. I really dig Menchi, but all the other examiners are men and whenever one sees crowd pictures of the Hunter applicants it's all men. I really like this series but this makes me cranky. I know it gets better later on - there are great female characters with diversity in terms of body types, personality and ways to dress (yes, One Piece, I am looking at you, you fail me greatly in that regard), but right now it just sends the message that girls aren't as equipped to become Hunters.
