Although I like the idea of a lady finding her own voice and expressing it during not so great time for women, including some romance, it was very predictable and the characteristics somewhat rushed and not polished enough. Yet, at the same time, it fits the original thought, feminist.

It did not satisfy my appetite for regency era storytelling.

I will say the voice actor did a marvelous job. It was funny and spot on.

The first half was enjoyable. And then everyone’s decisions—Eliza’s in particular—stopped making any sense at all. It felt like they made them simply to get the plot where the author wanted it to go, but not because of any real impetus within the world of the novel. For example,
Eliza declaring that she won’t marry Somerset at all because she can’t wait six months (or, for that matter, Somerset declaring that they cannot marry for so long in the first place)
was baffling especially since that reasoning went fairly uncontested by the other characters involved. It was convenient plot-wise but I’m not convinced that the decision was in character. A great example of a book where maybe actually everybody just needs to put a pause on romance before they’ve had some therapy.

I received an eARC of this book from NetGalley and the publisher in exchange for an honest review.

The pacing is slow for my taste, but I appreciated the plotting overall. Eliza is a well-written main character, and I loved seeing her live her best life after spending ten years in a loveless marriage (plus it gave Sophie Irwin an excuse to include more of Margaret, who is a sarcastic delight). I usually roll my eyes at love triangles, but I actually enjoyed this one because it resolves in a creative way. The chemistry between Eliza and her eventual husband is also solid and full of witty banter.

I haven't read Irwin's previous book, but I think I'll pick it up!

I think I loved this novel even more than I enjoyed Irwin's first novel. I love anything to do with Bath, so of course the setting made me incandescently happy, but I think I loved the plot itself, too. Eliza's maturity and self-growth were refreshing and inspirational. I loved the plot twist towards the end AND the way that it was resolved - no mean feat! It was refreshingly feminist without sacrificing historical accuracy or romance and a happy ending. A highly diverse and enjoyable read.

Eliza, who married an old crusty man at her family's behest, is now widowed, and ready to try and live. First, she'll just have to figure out what that means to her.

I LOVED this book, the banter and conversation was absolutely charming, and watching Eliza grow into herself was inspiring. I loved the conflict between the love interest(s---there are multiple, because she's really living!) and the way Eliza got to fall in love, again. I wish I could be real life friends with Eliza. This was a perfect second book to the A Lady's Guide series, I enjoyed it even more than the first one!
