★★★★☆ - I'm so glad to end 2021 with a good book!

When I read the back cover of this book, I wasn't that convinced about it. I thought it would be very similar to other YA books I read before (and loved like [b:The Winner's Curse|16069030|The Winner's Curse (The Winner's Trilogy, #1)|Marie Rutkoski|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1377023523l/16069030._SX50_.jpg|21861552] for example). I thought this book would be just okay, that's why it took me a year before actually reading it.
However, as you can guess since this is a 4-star review, I absolutely loved it and was pleasantly surprised. Sure, the plot and story is quite generic and can sound a bit similar to other YA books BUT [b:Ash Princess|32505753|Ash Princess (Ash Princess Trilogy, #1)|Laura Sebastian|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1503181967l/32505753._SY75_.jpg|53100842] is also way more mature. Indeed, many subjects in this book aren't that often in YA books and I must say the story is quite violent.
I really enjoyed it and can't wait to start reading the second volume : [b:Lady Smoke|40702154|Lady Smoke (Ash Princess Trilogy, #2)|Laura Sebastian|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1532535833l/40702154._SY75_.jpg|60796563] !
I highly recommend this book, it's really great and you will probably like it if you enjoyed books like [b:The Winner's Curse|16069030|The Winner's Curse (The Winner's Trilogy, #1)|Marie Rutkoski|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1377023523l/16069030._SX50_.jpg|21861552] and generally like YA fiction.

Loved the dystopian vibe a got while reading the book and also loved the tiny bit of romance we got. One of my favourite characters has to be Cres, she is so mysterious and I can't predict how she's developing within the next books.

Dystopian Hunger Games meets fantasy YA. A compelling read, if only to see how the characters would turn out - but quite predictable in terms of “imprisoned important female figure has to choose between the boy of her childhood and the enemy’s son”

I’d recommend anyway!
