I love Cisneros's writing. This is clearly poetic in nature, and there is really no plot. But she paints a vivid picture. This is a series of essays, set in the US and in Mexico. Cisneros uses a lot of Spanish in these stories and most of my book club members (both book clubs) did not appreciate them very much. But I find her works immensely enjoyable.

I particularly liked her description of a child saying that when you turn 11, people forget that you are also 10 and 9 and 8 and 7 and 6 and 5 and 4 and 3 and 2 and 1 inside. (I'm paraphrasing here.) Heck, I'm way older than that, but I still occasionally recognize the 5-year-old in me.

This is the first book I've read by Sandra Cisneros and I found the collection of short stories to be a mixed bag. I personally prefer short stories that are plot-driven over those that paint a scene or sketch a character. This collection had more sketches than plot. The stories that were more to my taste were very well-done but, while I can appreciate the artistry of the stories that weren't to my taste, I can't say that I really enjoyed them. I'll try a novel by Cisneros in the future but I think I'll steer clear of her stories.

I’m already excited to reread this. I imagine myself reading it as a book club where we all gather after savoring it slowly and share the stories that feel most precious to us. It is the kind of book that I want to share with someone.

Decent amount of Spanish in it, but you can figure out what is going on.

"But oh kids, they's cute when they're little, but by the time they start turning ugly, it's too late, you already love them."

Oh, Sandra Cisneros~
