It feels rather dramatic to say I loved it because by today's standards, it actually isn't that much. I can only imagine how utterly shocking it was in 1881.
I did love it, though, because even though it did not "shock" me, it still felt so hauntingly real. It was a story I wouldn't have been surprised to hear today. Perhaps it helped that I had no clue what I was getting into going in. But personally, I connected with this one more than [b:A Doll's House|37793|A Doll's House|Henrik Ibsen|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1427119396l/37793._SY75_.jpg|10535173].

A beautiful, dark and twisted masterpiece. Reminded me of Lars von Trier, a bit. Surely he must've been inspired by this?
When I hear Regina and Oswald in there, I seemed to see Ghosts before me. I almost thing we're all of us Ghosts, Pastor Manders. It's not only what we have inherited from our father and mother that "walks" in us. It's all sorts of dead ideas, and lifeless old beliefs, and so forth. They have no vitality, but they cling to us all the same, and we can't get rid of them. Whenever I take up a newspaper, I seem to see Ghosts gliding between the lines. There must be Ghosts all the country over, as thick as the sand of the sea. And then we are, one and all, so pitifully afraid of the light.
When you forced me under the yoke you called Duty and Obligation; when you praised as right and proper what my whole soul rebelled against as something loathsome. It was then that I began to look into the seams of your doctrine. I wanted only to pick at a single knot; but when I had got that undone, the whole thing ravelled out. And then I understood that it was all machine-sewn.
