“Oh, father... father! I never knew anything about my father. All I remember about him is that he once made me sick.”
“What a terrible thought! Surely a child father ought to love its father in spite of it all?”
“What if a child has nothing to thank its father for? Never knew him? You don't really believe in all this superstition still, do you? And you so enlightened in other ways?”

Great play about how people who observe their duty and social obligations can have a life made of lies and also create terrible consequences for the ones they love. It's also an important aspect that Pastor Manders is clueless about life, showing that sometimes we are quick to judge people without knowing what they really are experiencing.
After reading this, one wants to slap that pastor guy. 2 stars for him exclusively.
I love English class this year, and I did really well I hope on this essay test comparing Ghosts and A Doll House. Thumbs up Ibsen, thanks for trying to change the awful Victorian world with your plays. Thanks for being so controversial. Thanks for being norwegian. I can't wait to see these!
My new favorite Ibsen play, primarily because it tackles scandalous situations with clarity and arms itself with characters whose tactics display their inability but also their need to move past what society obliges them to do.
A terribly sad story about one mother's fight to preserve her vagrant husband's memory in the eyes of her son and the world, Ghosts deals with topics such as venereal disease, incest, adultery, abandonment and blackmail. At the time of its first productions, it was considered trash by many for the way it addressed unspoken topics, but what Ibsen does with those unspoken topics is so much more impressive than the topics themselves. He weaves a tale of inevitable failure together based on inheritance of a father's awful nature, and he merely uses what many people suppose is inherited syphilis to complete the likeness of father and son. The final image and words of the play are so affecting because we know the mother is incapable of saving her son or even putting an end to his misery--she will remain trapped by Ghosts for the rest of her days, since she is so married to what the law says is right.
A great cautionary tale today and tomorrow.

"The sins of the father are visited upon the children."
