A beautiful, bizarre slice of fantasy joy against the backdrop of the early AIDS epidemic. A perfect beach read for esoteric, cerebral queers.

a very entertaining trip to the world of gay men in the late eighties. this book is super snappy. it reads a lot like tales of the city and its greatest strength is it’s pacing. the characters are all flawed, but understandable and interesting to spend time with. surprisingly, the magic system was also pretty well fleshed out for a book like this. this is a perfect beach read, particularly for pride month, and a unique new addition to the historical fantasy genre. read for the r/fantasy book bingo 2025 release prompt.

A good read that made me both laugh and cry! While definitely a romance at its core, it was really more about processing grief and finding yourself.

I loved the witchy/fantasy side - it was a big reason I wanted to read this book! - but I could have used a little more magic. The Disco Witch Manifesto quotes that started each chapter were awesome!

A few of my favorite quotes:
“Life will surprise you. Let it. - Disco Witch Manifesto #83” (p. 10)

“The overlords, trapped in their armor of fixed identity, try to decimate the holy lovers with fists and laws, but Disco Witches always fight back - not only for the holy lovers, but for the overlords themselves. When the holy lovers are finally free, all will be free. - Disco Witch Manifesto #20” (p. 164)

“The truth moved at its own velocity, and NOW was its moment.” (p. 270)
