Perfect plotting with elements of the heists nested within each other and lots of action.

This was my first Daniel Silva book. It was really really good. Started a bit slow, but that all changed about half way through. Really enjoyed this book! (Thx Holly)

To be rated/reviewed after this month’s book club

While this is the second book I've read by this author, it was the first in the Gabriel Allon series. I had forgotten that the other book was a standalone and had a hard time reconciling the time periods at first (oops :)). I probably should've checked my write-up for the other book sooner than I did ;) Overall, I enjoyed the book, but I found the plot a little bit disjointed when the story shifted from an art heist to a bank heist. I liked the writing and the way the different story threads were eventually woven together, but it took awhile to get there in my opinion. While I thought this worked as a standalone read, I think I would've benefitted from having read an earlier book in the series to better understand and connect to the main characters.

In addition to being a book club pick, I used this for the "book involving a heist" prompt for the 2018 PopSugar Ultimate Reading Challenge.

I felt like I'd read this before but couldn't remember the specific details. Or maybe the Gabriel Allon books follow a very consistent pattern. Anyway, I liked it, but it wasn't anything special.

The 14th book in this series starts with Gabriel Allon agreeing to assist the Italians in tracking down a stolen piece of art. He quickly discovers a connection between stolen paintings and wealth being stashed away by the Syrian President. "The Heist" is the Mossad plan to steal from the Syrians the billions of dollars that they are concealing in banks around the world.

I enjoyed this book. The pacing is good, the plot is both interesting and topical, and it feels less formulaic than other books in the series. However I still can't figure out why everyone thinks that Gabriel Allon is so wonderful - not only is he humourless and dull, but he completely stuffs the entire mission up and yet gets to emerge with his reputation intact.
