3.0

I waffled between 3 and 4 stars on this, and if I had the option, I would give it 3.5. I thought the author had some interesting ideas, and I liked the chemistry between the main characters, but I also had a number of problems with this book, which desperately needs the help of a good editor.

I liked that our heroine, Sarah, has xeroderma pigmentosum, a genetic disorder that makes exposure to sunlight very dangerous for her. This is one of the better examples I have seen of how to write a main character with a disability. Sarah's condition definitely affects her, but it does not define her and is not a main focus of the book, although it does become a factor several times.

Sarah is a teenager, and I was sometimes annoyed by her stubbornness and reckless, impulsive actions. However, her behavior was realistic for someone her age, and for the most part, I liked her and the other characters. I cared about what happened to them.

I think the author is very creative and has some original ideas, but she may have tried to pack too much into one story. After a while, I was really struggling to sustain disbelief.

Also, there were a lot of editing problems. In particular, I found a lot of wrong words used (e.g., "title" instead of "tidal"). This wasn't so much of a problem that I couldn't follow the author's intended meaning, but it happened often enough to be irritating and distract me from the story.

Finally, there is no tidy ending here. The book ends fairly abruptly with much left unresolved, in what some might consider a cliffhanger ending. As far as I can tell, the planned sequel has not yet been released, and I'm not sure when or if it will be. So, read at your own risk if you don't like unresolved story threads.

Possibly recommended for adults who enjoy erotic romance with scifi and fantasy elements.
