This had so much potential but it failed to meet it.  There were some good things - I liked Clover & thought she was a good contrast to Sawyer, and when they were together, they had great chemistry.  However, the things I didn’t like outweighed the good.  It felt oddly paced at times and just a bit empty.  Mostly, I didn’t like Sawyer - he almost felt like a non-entity in his own story.  Just smug, smirky & focused on business but too chicken to tell his mother to keep out of his love life.

This book was overall good but the plot was very simple to the point where I feel like I’ve read it before

Definitely a light enjoyable read. Nothing too outstanding about it, characters not completely well rounded. But after a reading slump, I enjoyed the silliness of the characters.

The Negotiator by Avery Flynn

Narrated by Stephanie Rose

Contemporary Romance. First standalone in an interconnected series.

I got The Negotiator by Avery Flynn in my September Bookworm Box. I hate putting books I haven’t read on my shelf, so I had to get this one, especially when I saw it was on audio! I listened to most of this book while driving, therfore I didn’t take notes or bookmark as many quotes as usual, so this will be a quick review of this fun and sexy read.

The Negotiator might not be overly memorable or unique, but I totally enjoyed listening to it. Clover was a world traveler and needed money to go on her next trip to Australia, so she answered an ad to be a “buffer’ for Sawyer Carlyle (no, she isn't "buffing" him, a buffer between him and his meddling mom!).

The ad was placed by his brother as a joke. Sawyer inherited his company, but he took it very seriously and worked very hard. His mom wants him to get married and keeps bringing society girls for him to date. So when Clover unknowingly runs his mom off, she gets the job Sawyer didn’t even know he needed filled.

One of my favorite things about this story was how Clover was spunky and tough, and I think SHE is the negotiator!
“Sawyer tried to remember the last time he’d had his ass handed to him on a silver platter that matched the spoon he’s been born with and came up blank. He definitely couldn’t remember a time when he’d enjoyed it quite that much.”

The banter and flirtation were great, I loved these two together! When they had to fake that they were engaged, it certainly wasn’t a stretch for them.
"Sawyer Carlyle, are you trying to flatter your way into my panties?"
"Are you even wearing any?"

Of course there is some angst but it was balanced by humor and banter, and of course, some sexy times.

Likes:

  • •A fun, easy and light read. I smiled the whole way through.

  • •I loved her spunky personality.

  • •He wasn’t a manwhore first! Yippee!

  • •Lots of banter. I love banter!

  • •Kind of a slow burn.

  • •They were opposites.

  • •The growth and changes he made because of her.

Dislikes:

  • •Her language thing. She just randomly said foreign phrases.

  • •There was nothing unique about it. In fact, I had to delete a whole section of this review because I confused it with another book.

The Narration:

This was a 3rd person book, but really well done 3rd person. I may not have even noticed if it weren’t for one person narrating the whole book, because the 3rd person shifted focus between them, I sometimes expected a male to verbalize “his” chapters. But Stephanie Rose did a fantastic job with the narration, and I would love more books by her!

The Down & Dirty:

The Negotiator was a fun, flirty and sexy way to spend a day of driving and cleaning. I found myself smiling and enjoying every second of it, but as I review about 10 days later, I am struggling with recalling most of it. It’s a fairly common storyline with a fairly common trope (fake fiancee), so it was a bit easy to confuse with other books. Still, this was my first time reading Avery Flynn and I will definitely pick up another book from her.

Rating: 4 Stars, 4 Heat, 4 Narration

Kind of leaning more towards 3.5 but I loved the premise of a buffer 😁
