Quite strange, lyrical and absorbing in a way, but nothing much happens.
A beautiful and delicate book that manages to cover a wide variety of philosophical ideas, and express the challenges of finding harmony in an unharmonious world. Whilst a bit dry in places, the beauty of the prose and the ideas behind it shine through and make this a truly illuminating work.

This book was a slog for me to get through, but in the end I felt that Hesse had interesting things to say about scholasticism, asceticism, and the place of both learning and religion in society - especially the notion of knowledge for its own sake. I'll probably never read it again, but I'm glad that I read it.
I gave up on this halfway through, thoroughly bored. So many better books to read!
An intriguing tale woven from philosophy, music and desire, a story of what it means to be human
“No permanence is ours; we are a wave
That flows to fit whatever form it finds:
Through night or day, cathedral or the cave
We pass forever, craving form that binds.”
The love for music, philosophy and literature is embedded in this book. The first time I’ve read this book in my teenage years. I was smitten with the depth, philosophical mystery, heroism, contemplation between reality and art. The book inspires to play the bead game ourselves. The prose is fancy, yes, but if the reader isn‘t afraid of it, there is much to discover in this book, it‘s one of the books that I‘ve read several times during my life, and I‘m sure I will read it again after a few decades. Hesse is one of my favorite classics.
