The way that we think is influenced by two systems, which Kahneman names System 1 and System 2. System 1 generally responds quickly and instinctively, while System 2 is more deliberate--dealing with tasks that require more focused attention. The book also touches on how we often do not act as rationally as Econs would expect as well as ways in which our memories can be influenced.
I pulled some practical advice from this book. For example, he notes that positive reinforcement tends to be much more effective than negative feedback, despite what our gut tells us. I am going to make sure that I remember this when we have a new PBIS initiative at school (it is based on real science!).
There was a lot of information in this book, and I don't think I absorbed all of it as well as I wish I would have. I think I am going to leave it sitting on my desk so I can open it up and review it when inspiration strikes. There is so much information that explains the way that we make decisions, it would be a waste to ignore it. Some of it may speak to me differently as my life changes. This was a quality work of psychology, and I am grateful for the opportunity to read it.
