Second to None

Second to None is the third book in The Breakfast Club series, and Felice Stevens once again had me hooked. Although I had some issues with this book, for the most part I enjoyed it. Thus, even though it’s not quite a full four-star rating, I rounded up my rating with this one.

I’m going to be honest and say I had mixed feelings towards Marcus prior to starting this book. I was curious about his story, but I did not much care for him as a character. He provided some humour in the two prior books, but humour is not enough to have me loving a character. Nevertheless, the pesky curiosity remained.

Did Marcus win me over in Second to None? Mostly, yes. I came to like him a lot more, but I never came to love him in the way I loved the characters in the prior books. I had too many issues with his behaviour early in the book to completely love him, but he grew on me throughout. In fact, Tyler was the character I favoured in this story. It was Tyler’s story I wanted more of, I wanted to see how the details of his life came together.

There is no doubt Second to None is an addictive story, containing the usual Felice Stevens elements, it’s just one that requires you to accept more of the unbelievable than you usually would with a Felice Stevens read. Namely, the behaviour of a four-year-old. I have never met a four-year-old that acted the way the one in this story did, especially with what had happened. If you’re able to overlook that, though, the story is addictive.

Overall, Second to None was a great addition to the series. It’s not my favourite The Breakfast Club read, but it was a story that has me hooked and willing to read the short stories that follow.
