I thought it was VERY good. Part of me wishes it had removed the time travel element and instead took a page from Maus and been partially about the author writing the book, but I realize without her grandmother around to tell the story, it could not have included the camps themselves had it gone that route. Still very well done, and if this is the authors first book (as it seems to be?) I hope we get a lot more later on.
Do I like graphic novels now? I think I do! I learned quite a bit about Japanese American internment camps, and I loved the time travel element.

A teenage girl is sent back in time, displaced, to first hand witness the Japanese incarceration camps in the US during WWII.
This was emotionally devastating on many levels. I think it's certainly appropriate for ages 10 and up and gives some good insight into events Americans are not often taught about. I was lucky in that I had a middle school teacher who taught us that one camp was what we had always known as our state fair grounds. But I know many others my age who didn't know about it until George Takei began talking about them around 2016.
I think this is a good place to start or expand your knowledge.

Well written and drawn story about a piece of history I was unfamiliar with. I liked how the time travel element works as a metaphor for intergenerational trauma. Although understandable, the political message was laid on thickly, which I think could've been stronger in more subtle storytelling.

(4.5 ish) this might be my favorite standalone graphic novel i’ve read!! the artwork is spectacular. this concept of being displaced in time through memories is really interesting and was executed so well. i’d highly recommend this especially if you love history like I do (:
Great graphic novel and educational tool on Japanese WWII concentration camps based on the author’s own family history. Look forward to reading it with my daughter!
