beautiful illustrations and i appreciated so much how much this taught me about japanese internment camps in world war II
I find it hard to rate this book when I almost never read historical fiction or graphic novels, but I took this from my college's writing center months ago and it's been laying in my bookshelf ever since. For a quick read, there are lines here that felt incredibly moving, and a few that felt stilted and incohesive, but overall I really enjoyed this, and as a plus, the art style and palette is beautiful.

Please read this graphic novel. It was so eye-opening and there are so many parallels between what’s been happening the last 10 years and the Japanese incarceration camps. Heartbreaking and absolutely infuriating. This book needs to be read.
I thought this was a really clever way to tell a story, interspersing it with the news and memories of Kiku's grandmother. Definitely a great recommendation for YA historical fiction.
I really liked this way of writing about historical events and the family trauma that gets passed down. It's so heartbreaking to know that the protagonist's unfamiliarity with their family's past is not uncommon, but it's a bit healing to watch her go through the same things her grandmother did and learn more about her life.
