A bit young for me, but that’s not its fault! (It’s YA)

A compelling narrative about Japanese-American internment and a particularly good contextualization of the concept of “no-no”. Though I was familiar with the phrase, I didn’t realize the impact on lives of that small act of protest, or the nuances of the narrative in the camps at the time.

Really clear and compelling art style. I was rolling my eyes a bit at the “back in time” premise initially, but this stuck the landing. Overall very well done and an excellent resource for a teen or younger person interested in AAPI or American history, radical histories, intersectional activism, etc.

A girl travels back in time and experiences the Japanese Interment Camps of WWII. She draws parallels to the camps that Trump had during his presidency and the ones he is calling for.

"being from the future meant very little when my education on the past was so limited"

kiku hughes does a fantastic job of taking us into these displacements into the past, and the slow learning about the past. i'd say it pairs incredibly well with george takei's they called us enemy (including the fact that both have gorgeous illustrations). most of all, it spoke to me that even in the past where one would believe that they know what will happen next, the history taught to us covers up so much
