This book is a very in depth look at one of the most fascinating military personalities in American history. Very interesting book. It can get a little wordy but MacArthur is pretty interesting overall.

Very well written, in depth with a (nowadays unusual) neutral point of view. While I'm sure Manchester has a strong opinion ("Virtually all Americans above a certain age hold strong opinions about Douglas MacArthur" from the book's jacket) about his subject, he is professional enough to keep it out of sight. We see the good, the bad and the ugly about MacArthur and, I have to admit, my opinion of him was significantly changed by this book. And my opinion was formed listening to a parent that served under him in one of the last century's wars.
