There is something remarkable about a great set of stories. Gay Degani succeeds in having a collection of uniformly great stories. The simplicity of the writing works well, and for me simple, effective writing is a pleasure to read. The predominantly female characters are well written, and I was clamoring for more after reading all of the stories in one sitting. I have one problem with this collection, though, and it's the same problem I've had with Alice Munro: everything is sad. Don't expect to feel well or satisfied after reading these stories. Recommended for those who love great, sad writing.
