Wowzers. I haven’t been so assaulted by a book since A Little Life. This is violent and traumatic and upsetting, but I love books that rip my heart out, and it’s also absolutely beautiful. The love story at the heart of it is so tender and gorgeous. The writing is brilliant. It’s tense and impossible to put down. Enjoyed it so much more than Shuggie Bain, which I also loved, and it has a lot of the same themes but it’s more focused on the gay son rather than the alcoholic, neglectful mother. Feeling very grateful not to have grown up in the Glasgow housing estates in the 1980s!

This was a hard read and took me a long time to get through. It's scary to think about the things queer people went through in the not so distant past and in most places still do.

Mungo met the first kind adult in the very last few pages so this sets the pace for the book...

Excited (and afraid) to read more of this author.
