An austere, mesmeric study of a young girl’s sensory world, this novella distills experience into something both intimate and impersonal. The prose is feverish yet emotionally distant, enacting the estrangement of cultural dispossession.
You can recognize Shibli’s writing style. It is again a quiet book and I like the blurb or whatever on this one because it captures that quietness and how despite being quiet, every ripple creates a little wave and all of it culminates in something big.
But it is also different because here it is more poetry like in the sense that she plays more with omission- as in not everything is said, some things are only inferred although others are states quite clearly.

Shibli's Minor Detail was short and packed such a mighty punch. I can't stop thinking about that book and was excited to read this one, not knowing what to expect.
Still short, this was hauntingly quieter with the punch packed in the periphery of the story. From the perspective of a young girl in Palestine, you observe from her young naive eyes her world so you experience her earache and her attending a funeral in a pant with a hole in it. But it's in the periphery of the story that you realize the story is covering the Sabra and Shatila massacre, the murder of a family member, occupation.
