3.5 stelle

It took 1/3 of the book for a murder to happen but I was gripped on every page. This is why Agatha Christie is the queen of mystery

Impeccable

My, my, my, Miss Christie… this is pure chef’s kiss.
A beautifully complicated story with multiple murders, intricate twists, and a plot so sharp it’s almost dangerous.

From the very beginning, I had a hunch about the central twist — even before the crimes were committed — and I knew I’d be disappointed if Christie went any other way. She didn’t. The execution was flawless, delivering exactly the perfect plot I’d been hoping for, while still managing to surprise me.

Poirot’s development here is exceptional. His partnership with Colonel Race is a highlight — two minds working in quiet harmony, both analytical, both unwilling to voice suspicions until absolutely certain. While Poirot still utters the occasional arrogant remark, his actions tell a different story: kindness, empathy, understanding, and even forgiveness. These qualities made him not just clever, but genuinely lovable.

This book is a major leap forward in Christie’s work — a refined balance of tension, psychology, and human emotion. Love taken to the level of obsession is frightening… and here, it’s the deadliest weapon of all.

Really complex in its execution, Agatha Christie is really a marvelous writer and storyteller. I have read maybe five of her novels now and they are all so well written and skillfully planned. In this one it was, however, a bit hard to keep track of who everyone was since there were so many characters. Regarding the narrator (since I listend to the audio book read by David Suchet), he was really good at giving each character a distinct voice, but his performance included him raising and lowering his voice a lot, which was great for effect but not great for my ears, I could not have ear phones in without having the audio being too loud, and hurt, or too low, and me missing what was said.
