Another lovely Three Pines novel. I always enjoy when the novels include true history, political cleavages, or describe different areas of Canada. This novel takes Gamache and crew to the outreaches of the St. Lawrence river. I also appreciate that every novel is essentially about broken people dealing with pain and failure. Some rebulid one another, others lash out, but it is always written in a thoughtful and enlightening manner.

I should probably wait until I have emotionally stabilized from the ending of this book before I write my review, but here we are. The structure of this book is different from the others. We start with a mystery, but not a murder and Gamache is retired and just helping a friend. I was less engaged than usual, especially after book 9 which was incredible. Still, the ending had me in tears and while I didn’t throw the book, exactly, I did drop it on the floor.
