I'm in love with Armand Gamache!

Armand Gamache, formerly the Chief Inspector of Homicide with the Surete du Quebec, has retired to the village of Three Pines to find peace and to live a quiet life. The year before his retirement, two of his closest friends in the village, Clara and Peter Morrow, found themselves in a troubling phase of their marriage and they agreed to separate for one year. However, at the end of the year, Peter failed to return to Three Pines or to contact Clara and she asks Gamache to help her find Peter and find out what is wrong. This book is quite simply captivating. However, new readers: please, please, please read the books of Louise Penny in order. This is the tenth book in the series and I promise you that you will be drawn into life in the village of Three Pines and you will never regret it.

** Mild spoilers, but only if you haven't read the previous books in the series.

I love this series, but I was wondering how the mysteries were going to happen now that Armand Gamache is retired -- will he be basically a village busybody pulled in to coincidental mysteries, will he be called by the police to "consult," will it be some other thing?

In this book, at least, he's enlisted by a friend (Clara Morrow) to help locate her missing husband. The searching, piecing together clues, tracking down long-lost people part of "the Long Way Home" is interesting, but the police procedural part is missing. I didn't know whether that would be too important but the way the team works has always been an integral -- and interesting -- part of these books, and its absence is noticeable.

The plot itself is pretty involved, but the ending felt forced and rushed, and the motive seemed contrived. Also, the tension and bad blood between Beauvoir and Gamache is just resolved -- poof! --and pretty much never spoken of again.

But it is nice to spend time with the characters in Three Pines, and it's nice to see Reine-Marie Gamache have a bigger role. While this not my favorite book in the series, I'll still be waiting for the next one.
