LISTEN!!
When I heard Celine doesn’t really get a POV until halfway through this book I was annoyed, but once I started reading g it just got so perfectly?!?! We get so much backstory and context for Bastien and all the members of his court as well as Emilie.
PLOT
This novel is definitely more plot-heavy than the first, yet it still focuses mainly on character development. This book sees more fast paced action and some intense scenes. I liked the blending of okra and the multiple POVs to show different characters understanding of what was happening

CHARACTERS
I LOVE these characters. I’ve got to say that Bastien, Celine, Odette and Arjan are my favourites, but they’re all unique and lovely with their own voice. The only character who really frustrated me was Pippa, and seeing how the next book focuses on her, I’m a little nervous.
I really appreciated the slow burn aspect of the romance in this novel. I loved the push and pull between our two main characters and how once they make their decisions they are 100% in it. They had my heart.

WORLDBUILDING
This novel is definitely more heavy on worldbuilding than the first, however it was done incredibly well through flashbacks and conversation. The magic system really comes alive in this novel and it’s made it such a unique and wonderful experience

REVIEW
This is definitely a series I would recommend. While it is YA, it somehow gives a more NA feel, which I love. I’m excited to continue this series

Sadly, I was a little disappointed with this one. And I really loved the first book.

After the events of The Beautiful and the cliffhanger of an ending, I could not wait to get my hands on the second installment. I expected it to have the same ambiance and the first and really pick up the story and just run. However, that was not what I got. The first 100 pages were boring led nothing to the story. I also don't understand why we suddenly needed everyone's POV here. I mean, it shouldn't have taken over 100 pages to get to Celine - our main heroine. While I love a good back story, I didn't need it dumped on me for every character.

Once I got past that hump, the story finally picked up but it was nowhere near the story of the first book. This almost seemed like two different stories merged into one to fill a book. And that makes me really sad because, again, the first book was beautifully written.

Another thing about this book that really threw me was how different all of the characters seemed. Yes, they all went through some traumatic experiences by the end there, but at the core, they are who they are. Celine was rude in this book. She treated her best friend horribly and flitted from Michael to Bastien and then back again. It spoke nothing of the strong willed character I met in the first. And don't even get me started on how horrible Bastien was written here. I honestly don't know what happened.

I went into this thinking it was a duology but now I'm hearing that it may be 5 books and part of me wonders if that was decided at the last minute and that's why this book seemed so jumbled together. I will read the next one because the last portion of the book was starting to pick up and I do want to see where this goes. But I hope it's more of a cohesive story than this installment.

DID NOT FINISH: 3%

Dnfing so far because the first book did not really hook me

And...I forgot who everyone is😂🤷🏽‍♀️

I think someone became a vampire or somthing...whatever

I don’t really know what to think of this series. It’s an interesting setting and world, and the characters are all intriguing—I’m especially curious about Jae and Madeline. But the actual story plot is slow and boring as hell. Like what even happened in this book? I’m also not a fan of multiple povs—I find it almost always to be a lazy way to get info across—and this had like six or seven povs. And I’m not sure half were necessary. Did we really need Emily’s pov on the house burning? We already heard it from Bastian. And her side offered little new info except her uncle turning away and the wolf which easily could have been a line rather than a whole chapter. I just think this series leaned too far into the intrigue and isn’t delivering on the goods. Half the book Celine and Bastian didn’t even interact.
