Great first installment for the trilogy, it did a great job of setting up the world and the rest of the series. I was not gripped the entire way through the book but it was an enjoyable read. I believe the ending of this book was great and I can't wait to read the rest of the series, I have a feeling they will be even better.

I didn't realize how often I read for vibes until I read Beasts of Prey. I should have seen the plot twists coming but I didn't, and now I feel dumb but in a great way 🤣 they are mostly long chapters so I had to take a break after each one and process, but I loved it all. The stuff I wanted more of came later in the book, the stuff I didn't like was explained or taken care of, and the creatures and creepy scenes absolutely had me dreading what would happen. It was just great. I don't want to spoil anything, but I'm very glad I already have the next 2 books 😁

It took a while to get into it but after that I really enjoyed it.

I liked but didn’t love the writing. The story was great, though. I’ll definitely be reading the second book.

I want to first thank Bookishfirst, Ayana Gray, and Penguin Teen for this advanced copy in exchange for an honest review!

I wasn't completely sure what this book was about, but knew that I was definitely intrigued by the title and cover! I'm so glad I picked it up!!

From the title you might think it's about some type of jungle safari (at least thats where my mind went

Gray does a fantastic job of creating a magical world with vivid imagery. I could visualize with ease the monsters and creatures of the jungle. One can’t help but love and root for Koffi and Ekon. I’ll be anxiously awaiting the sequel.

Blessed to have received an advanced copy of this book via my good friend over at Read Woke. First novels are like first albums from a hip hop artist. So much work and effort finally come together. That freshness, that hunger.

Well to say I loved this book is an understatement. It was so so good. A fantasy sci fi book with representation, great characters, a nod fo pan-African history and folklore. And a great twist at the end.

I cannot wait for book 2!

Thanks again to Ayana for sharing yourself, your inspiration and your book— and thanks to Read Woke for the opportunity to be a part of a great event and for introducing Ayana to us.

4.5 stars. Great ā€œpan-Africanā€ fantasy.
